Good news for solar thermal! The first step for the operation of the ground breaking, dual use solar thermal system has been completed successfully. TVP’s solar panels have been mounted on the rooftop of M&R production plant.

For the first time ever, high vacuum flat panels will be used to generate steam during the summer season and hot water during winter. Within October and November 2020 the full solar field will be installed and integrated into the M&R thermal energy processes. This is not an easy task; relatively high operating temperatures and pressure require additional safety measures and control points in the engineering layout.

As a result, passive mechanical controls have been introduced on top of the sensor-enabled automation and control. Further challenges lie ahead during the testing and commissioning of the solar system. The involved partners though, are well prepared and experienced. Despite Covid-related constraints the SHIP2FAIR teams of M&R and TVP have been working since July 2020 according to the agreed timetable.

The project consortium acknowledged this effort and congratulated Luca Castellino and the team from Martini & Rossi  for setting and following timeline for installation; providing regular progress updates and visual material; and for their overall responsiveness. SHIP2FAIR expects to perform an initial assessment of the performance of the solar system early spring 2021, after a few months under full operation.
